Cassie W’s Baby Shower

August 22nd, 2010

I got to host a baby shower for a co-worker this weekend.  She is having a baby girl so after about three seconds of brainstorming I decided that the theme would be pink.

I know!

Brilliant!

This extremely daring and creative theme allowed me to offer my guests a variety of pink drinks.

I served pink strawberry margaritas and pink cosmos rimmed with (you guessed it) pink sugar.  The white bowl is full of  pink sugar (which I bought ready made in a department store) but some of my guests thought it was raw ground beef at first.

I served pink cocktail shrimp, strawberries, watermelon, pink cupcakes with pink icing decorated with pink sour watermelons and pink jordan almonds and this buffet of pinkness was rounded out by a fabulous selection of Sonic corn dogs which are revered by all my co-workers for their non-stop corny wonderment and their delicate yet so tasty pink interiors.

Cassie C. made her delectable sausage stars.

And the guest of honor drank a virgin pink margarita while we dutifully regaled her with every birthing horror story we could think of.

Not really.

Only I did that.

Cassie C made Cassie W a custom onesie.

Melissa made her a custom blankie.

It was a lovely evening.
And the next morning after drinking three cosmos – I woke up feeling like I had been rammed by a moose in the wilds of Wyoming and left to die.

They are so deceptively fruity that one easily forgets the vodka part.

Never fear!

There were plenty of left over cupcakes with which to soothe myself.

  • I am very, very upset that I am not your neighbor…. and therefore invited to the baby shower.
I am very, very upset that I am not Cassie’s friend…. and therefore invited to the baby shower.
I am very, very upset that there’s no pink shrimp, sausage stars, strawberries, jordan almonds (of any color), corn dogs, strawberry margarita’s or cosmo’s in this house!!!
I’m going to fix myself a strong gin & tonic (I do have the fixings for that) and put my feet up.

Thanks for the cyber baby shower. I love pink.

  • P.S. Your windows are very, very clean. Would you like to come over and do mine? I’ll mix a gin and tonic for you too.

    • Rechelle:

Suzanne – I too love pink and with four boys, it has never been featured quite so prominently in my house as it should be. I too am very upset that you were not at the shower since it is abundantly clear that you would have deeply appreciated my mind boggingly creative theme of pinkness. I have never had a gin and tonic. Is it good for hangovers?

      • Rechelle:

I don’t drink very often, but when I do a gin and tonic is my drink. It is so deceptive because it doesn’t taste very full of liquor. Very limey and most refreshing. One of my husband’s many talents is that he can make me the best gin and tonic.

        • Samantha:

Gin and tonic is my favorite drink…..my husband says they taste like medicine, I only wish medicine tasted like that!

Rechelle, you rock with the pink theme…it’s so simple it’s pure genius……btw I LOVE the white (wooden?) chairs.

I actually hate baby showers, not babies, just baby showers.

  • LucyJoy:

    Everything looks so Pinkalicious!

Do you have a favorite recipe for pink Cosmo’s?

Do you suppose Cassie C. would share her recipe for sausage stars? I’m hungry.

    • Rechelle:

LucyJoy – I am afraid that you are going to be disappointed in me, but I bought the cosmos pre-made in one of those plastic buckets that you mix and then freeze. You can find a recipe very similar to Cassie’s sausage stars at this link – allrecipes.com/Recipe/Won-Ton-Wrapper-Appetizers/Detail.aspx

      • LucyJoy:

Yum – they sound delicious! Every now & again, instead of a dinner party, we’ll have an appetizer party instead. I’m making the sausage stars for our next one! Thanks for the link.

Bucket-O-Drinks are sooooo good & easy. I don’t blame you for going the easy route. I’ll have to look for the Cosmo’s for our next camping trip.

By-the-by, I do love your Gimlet recipe. Nothin’ better than vodka & lime!

        • Cassie C.:

The link Rechelle provided is very similar, except the one I use has no black olives, and has a half cup of diced red bell pepper.

          • LucyJoy:

            Mmmm…red pepper! Thanks, Cassie.

  • Rechelle, you’ve never had a gin and tonic? You should drink more. You should go to bars.

If you come to Lawrence, we will go to bars and taste all manner of delicious cocktails.

See? I will win you over yet.

    • Martha in Kansas:

That sounds fun! I want to go along! There are tons of drinks I’ve never tried and always wanted to!
