Rechelle, I love reading your blog. Imagine my surprise to see the hotel where we stayed with friends in Paris!! L'ermitage. It was so lovely! And there is a finicular (hello, Google) up to Sacre Coeur so you don't have to walk. And now imagine my surprise to see your friend Liz, whom I also know! Tell her hello from Beth the SIMR librarian.

I've spent 2 summers in France with 4 children - and a week in Paris each time. We have stayed in wonderful places each time using Alistair Sawadays books - "Special Places To Stay." We have used them all over the world - and have only had poor luck once in Spain. I usually tend to choose the sight I want to be closest to and go from there. The last time I wanted to be near the Eiffel Tower so we found a darling hotel in Passy where one son and I went to the park early each morning and stopped for some perfect bread item on the way. I would also recommend doing something as touristy as "the big yellow bus." It's the typical tourist bus that takes you all over the city and you can hop on and hop off as you wish. The price is pretty reasonable ( I think about 75$ for all 6 of us for either 2 or 3 days). It let us see everything easily and we could always grab a metro if we wanted to get somewhere quicker. SO ENJOY!

Hi Rechelle,

I'm sure you have already looked at VRBO.com but if you haven't you should. I have lived & vacationed in France many times and by far my best experience was in a rental apartment in the 6th arrondisement - this is one of the best walking areas. Email me if you need any recs!

Rechelle, I think Sacre Coeur is way the honk up a hill (practically a mountian), so if you choose one near there you may be doing some horrible hill climbing, and I don't think that will be good for your weakness and shakiness.

We had a terrible time finding a hotel in Paris that didn't require us to take two rooms; hotels are required to not put more than 4 per room, but our kids were too small to stay on their own and we didn't want to split up.

We did eventually find a Best Western affiliate (note: they can be very cool in Europe; they are indiv owned) that fit us all in (shh!) one room and was near the Bastille/Opera House and the metro. It was a great place! I think we paid nearly 100 euros a night but this was in 2003.

Ibis Hotels are Europe's version of Motel 6--no frills, basic, but perfectly adequate. We have stayed in those when we've had long layovers.

Thanks for this. My husband and I are hoping to bring the kids to Paris when the youngest grows a little older. This summer we're off to Prague for a few days and I am so looking forward to it.
We're leaving the kids with our family in Ireland. I just can't wait! It's our 10th anniversary
